The Huntingdon High School Class of '53 reunion was another huge success as well as a thrilling event for all class members and guests who attended. It was held on Friday, April 14th and Saturday, April 15th, 2000 . Again, all activities, surrounding this annual event, were held at the Pin Oak Lodge in Natchez Trace State Park, Wildersville, Tennessee.
Twenty-eight (28) classmates from the class attended the reunion on either Friday or Saturday, with most attending both days. Also in attendance were spouses and g-b friends which brought the overall total to forty-seven (47) individuals for the two day affair. There were seventeen (17) classmates who attended on Friday and another twenty-six (26) classmates attending Saturday's events.
The number of classmates attending this year broke the previous year's attendance record. The previous record was set in 1999 when twenty-three (23) classmates attended. The total number of class members is considered to be fifty-one (51). For a list of classmates in attendance click here. It should be interesting to note that, except for only one, all surviving male members of the actual graduating class have attended the reunion over the years. Attendance for the male graduates attending this Year's 2000 Reunion: There were twelve (12) of the fourteen (14) present. These facts, in themself, seem to be some amazing statistics for this class. Yet, another interesting aspect is: Each year, another newly re-united class member finds his/her way back to be with the class at the reunion. This year we were happy to have three - yes, three newly re-found members: James Dill, Ruth Helen Gooch (Wall) and James Cooper. Also present was Mrs. Martha Thompson, our Huntingdon High School Class Sponsor, who came to be with us again this year. Mrs. Thompson attended Saturday's events. She was accompanied by her oldest son, David, along with his two daughters, Nancy and Sarah. The majority of classmates attending stayed overnight at Pin Oak Lodge. However one classmate and her husband spent the night at the Natchez Trace Campground in their trailer. Management at Pin Oak Lodge provided the class with the "Natchez Room", a facility inside Pin Oak Lodge, to serve as the class' hospitality center. Many hours of rehashing old memories and renewing old acquaintances took place in this room. Yet there were also other areas around Pin Oak Lodge where classmates met to reminisce. The Natchez Room also served the class for their business meeting and the evening dinner on Saturday night. During the business meeting, an example was seen which showed just how high the enthusiam within the Class of '53 runs. Larry Williams spoke to the class about Heritage 2000 which is scheduled in September at Huntingdon and which is to be held at the Carroll County Civic Center for 1937 through 1980 alumni of Huntingdon High School. When forms were passed out asking members of the Class of '53 to state their interest in Heritage 2000, twenty-six (26) out of twenty-seven (27) members returned their copy of the form stating that they had an interest in attending. The Natchez Room was also the place where entertainment was provided on Friday night. Supplying the entertainment was Sue (Mrs. Roy) Smith, Orvaline (Mrs. Hillard Mann) Taylor, Hillard Mann and Donald Roark. A number of quartet selections were song for that portion of the entertainment. Afterward, the class members and guests joined their voices together for a sing-a-long. Damon and Lamon King concluded that portion of the reunion with a couple of jokes each. Classmates are encouraged to join in as a participant to help supply entertainment for future reunions. If you, yourself, will help in any way with entertainment or if you know of other classmates who are talented in an entertaining way, you are encouraged to let this be known. Please send an email message regarding your participation and/or the participation of another classmate by clicking here; else call 901-686-8515 or fax information to 801-650-1460. The class had voted in 1993 to make our reunion a yearly affair and for it to be held during the month of April. The third weekend of the month was/is preferred. Adjustment in the dates is only made to this schedule in order to avoid any conflict with Easter weekend. During the business meeting, the class agreed to have next year's reunion on April 20th and 21st. That will be the 3rd weekend again and is the one following Easter in the year 2001. |
