2010 Class Reunion

The Fifty-Seventh Year Reunion for our Huntingdon High School Class of '53 was held at Pin Oak Lodge in Natchez Trace State Park on April 16th and 17th, 2010.

Total attendance for each of the two nights was as follows:

	Friday night (04/16): 0 Total: 0 Classmates
Saturday night (04/17): 28 Total: 17 Classmates (plus 9 spouses, 1 friend and 1 relative)

It was nice to have Helen (Turner) Woodson, Nancy (Hilliard) Fullerton, Harlan Wilcox and Bobby Guy Murphy back with us this year. Also, we enjoyed having Sue (Mitchell's) Daughter, Penny, as a guest along with Ralph Work. Thanks Penny for some great "Picture-taking". Ralph Work is a "Broh" anyway ... he is considered to be "one of us". Thanks for coming Penny and Ralph.

Again, Natchez Trace Management allowed us the use of the Natchez Room for the hospitality center ... for our meeting and lunch. Everyone arrived mid-morning and everyone brought a hearty appetite.

However, before the meal, most of the guys gathered outside on the veranda while the gals congregated in the Natchez Room. There probably wasn't room inside for the guy's BIG (as in ENORMOUS) fish tales anyway.

Yet it seemed that no matter how much everyone seemed to enjoy TALKING (many all at one time, Haha!), we were SOON ready for the meal at noon. Thus it was soon time for all of us to gather for the meal. So, shortly thereafter, Earl Jarrett was asked to say the "Blessing on the food" and then we ate. We enjoyed the noon meal (chicken, meat loaf, veggies, salad and desserts) and, of course, ... the fellowhip between classmates and others during the meal.

After everyone was finished eating, we were called into the Business Portion of our Reunion. Due to the absence of Butch Reams, President of our Class, this short business meeting was called to order by our Vice-president Donald Roark. Items of business and/or topics of discussion were as follows:
  • We went around the room remembering classmates who were not present. There was a report on Butch Reams and his bout with cancer and the treatments he is undergoing; we heard about Joyce Conyers and her husband, Gene Shanks; and why Lamon King couldn't attend; and Charles Wooters who was not feeling well enough to attend. We certainly missed all of you and hope all are well by this time.
  • We voted to return to Natchez Trace State Park (Pin Oak Lodge) for next year's reunion. The reunion in the year of 2011 will mark our 58th year. The date for next year's reunion was set for April 15th and 16th, 2011.
  • As of this writing, our main function for our reunions at this time (the NOON meal) will remain scheduled for noontime (12:00 o'clock) on the Saturday on which we meet. However, a side-note (re: questioning the wisdom of having a noon meal as the "highlight") is as follows:
    • Unofficial discussion(s) ... after the Business Meeting ... one could find people expressing somewhat "negative remarks" about the "Noon Meal for our Class" vs the "Way It Was Before". Or, perhaps, as it was sometimes expressed, "We might try doing SOMETHING different every now and then".
    • Classmates, discussing this subject, expressed that many people were now considering our reunion as only a CLASS MEAL rather than a CLASS REUNION.
    • Also, some were beginning to ask if it was worth the trip for ONLY a MEAL ... especially since many Classmates began leaving very soon thereafter.
    • It was also stated by some classmates that, "If we just wanted a NOON MEAL, we could find another eating place where the food would be MUCH BETTER and MUCH LESS COSTLY than the restaurant at Pin Oak Lodge.
    • It seems that this DISCUSSION needs be continued and maybe it should be brought up, either before next year's reunion, or maybe wait until the 2011 Reunion.
  • Mavis Johnson and Marge Gossett reported on the Huntingdon High School Alumni Association. They stated that the by-laws and constitution were being discussed and written at this time. Also, they reported that the ALUMNI Web Site is "up and running" but is still somewhat "under construction". The link for the ALUMNI WEB SITE is Click here. If you visit this link, you will notice that Mavis (Barnes) Johnson is a member of the Board. Also, Damon King and this writer expressed that we had sent in our membership fees to join the ALUMNI ASSOCIATION but that we had received "no confirmation" that our dues had been received. Mavis said she would check on this for us.
  • Larry Williams asked why post cards were not being mailed to each classmate ... a short time each year, before our reunion. Our Secretary, Nancy Fullerton, was asked about this. Nancy stated her feelings as this, "Cards are unnecessary" ... then went on to state that, "Classmates who are interested in attending our Reunion can find out about it very easily; either through contact with other classmates or via the Class Web Site."
  • A motion was made, seconded and passed that we adjourn.

Please NOTICE: If any Classmate remembers any Items of Business and/or Topics of Discussion that were not mentioned, please send an email to me at:    .
After adjourning, some of us fellowshipped for awhile and then we all "went on our separate ways - but ready to return again next year ... Lord willing".

There was much love "between classmates and for/from everyone" again this year. Actually it seemed like it was such a "short time" that we had together. We hope there are more of us who attend next year ... so please start making your plans to be there.
