Class of '53 - 50th Anniversary Reunion

by Donald Roark

Although the 50th anniversary reunion for our Huntingdon High School Class of 1953 has come and gone, those precious, albeit brief, moments of being together "again" on this past April 11th and 12th, 2003, still linger.

Memories - from the past - are not only brought to mind during these reunions - but new memories continue to accumulate. There is so much love and respect among this Class of 1953 and this most definitely must be the "driving force" that keeps us together - and wanting more and more. Also, our longing to be close to our classmates is reflected in the attendance.

Interested in statistics? Here goes:

Total Attendence: 53 persons
Classmates Attending: 30
Graduates Attending: 26 (out of 31 surviving graduates)

What a CLASS???? In the immortal words of that great philosopher, Forrest Gump, ........... Un-bee-weev-abull!~!~!~!

Then when one adds in all those "life-long" memories - spanning a period of 62 years (sometimes more) - well! what can one say? Try these:

1) "The excitement remains ..."
2) "Just keeps getting better and better ..."
3) "Ya ain't seen nuthin' yet ..."
4) "Priceless ..."
5) "Un-bee-weev-abull ..."
6) "All of the above ..."

The itinerary for the reunion's weekend activities - carried us from the Pin Oak Lodge in Natchez Trace State Park, Wildersville, on Friday night, the 11th, where twelve folks checked in early; to Harvey "Leon" and Shirley Turner's home in Huntingdon on Saturday morning; to the First Bank Community Room in Huntingdon for an "open house" and reception on Saturday afternoon; then back to the Pin Oak Lodge for dinner on Saturday evening and a "Class Meeting" that night.

Among the highlights of the entire weekend was the attendance of four "Prodigal Classmates" - Phyllis (Montgomery) Hogan, Velma (Brandon) Cooper, Joyce Ann (Espey) Cole and Jean (Lewis) Kemp. This was the first time Jean had attended one of our several previous reunions - with Joyce Ann, Velma and Phyllis having attended one in the past - that being several years ago.

Another VERY special person who attended was Mrs. Martha Thompson, our class sponsor for all four years of high school. Mrs. Thompson was brought from Nashville by one of her sons, David, along with his two daughters, Sarah and Nancy.

The brunch at the Turners was fabulous and not a single person left their house hungry. On the menu: Eggs, ham both fried and baked, sausage, tenderloin, biscuits, Amish rolls, strawberry shortcake, all kinds of preserves and jellies plus coffee and orange juice. Everyone enjoyed the great time of fellowship also. Many thanks to Harvey "Leon" and Shirley.

After leaving the Turner's house, everyone headed for the First Bank Community Room and the "open house". The turnout wasn't what had been expected but there were several visitors from other classes at Huntingdon plus a few who had attended high school elsewhere.

After the "open house", most headed back to Pin Oak Lodge to complete the year's reunion activities.

After eating dinner in the Lodge Restaurant, everyone headed for the "Natchez Room" for our Class Meeting.

Our Class President, James "Butch" Reams, welcomed everyone and presided over the meeting.

During the Class Meeting, it was voted to have our next year's reunion on April 16th and 17th - again at the Pin Oak Lodge in Natchez Trace. Also, many thanks were extended by James "Butch" Reams for the "job well done" by all for the splendid job planning and carrying out all reunion activities.

Also, George Parish requested that everyone update their "Bios" - then email them to him or else mail them to his home address. His email and home address can be found by clicking here.

Should you want to read your very own bio, you may do so on the Class web site. Also, you may scroll through the bios very quickly by placing the "cursor" in the blue area and clicking on it - as needed - for continued scrolling.

Bertie Douglas reported that our class has a balance of approximately (Hmmm! was it $400.00???) in an account set up to cover costs for flowers, postage and other miscellaneous expenses for the Class. Due to the generosity of classmates and spouses, there was very little expense involved from setting up and carrying out this particular 50th Anniversary activities.

Following the meeting, everyone enjoyed a great finish to the evening by taking our yearly stroll down "memory lane".
